Let the sun shine in

It was another beautiful day today. It was actually hot, which is wholly unexpected for Sweden in September. I wore shorts and mowed the lawn and marveled at the summery weather. It was lovely.

Tomorrow we’re going to Olof’s mom’s 60th birthday party, so we went to town this afternoon to find a present for her. She’s kind of hard to buy for, since she has everything and wants nothing, so I’m always at a bit of a loss when shopping for her. Today I settled on a gift bag of lemon sugar from Werner & Werner — it’s supposed to be good to put in tea or on ice cream or in desserts or what-have-you. I was surprised to see that they also had colored sugar there. I’ve always wanted some of that to make a certain cookie recipe that’s in my Betty Crocker cookbook, but I’d never seen it in Idaho. I didn’t buy any today, but I think I will someday.

What I did buy was makeup, since I hadn’t bought any new stuff in a couple of years. I just can never get over how crazy-expensive it is here! I bought one eyeliner pencil, an eyeshadow, a cover stick, a mascara, and a pressed powder and it cost me 300:- (about $30-35)! It wasn’t even great stuff — the cover stick was Maybelline, and the other stuff was Rimmel, which is sort of the low end of makeup in Sweden. I could probably have gotten the same stuff in the States for about $15. Ah well, what can you do?

We also popped in to the shoe store and bought Tage his very first pair of “real” shoes. They look so cute on him! For myself I got a pair of purple suede slip-ons that look cooler than the description sounds, especially considering that they were discounted 50%. I never get tired of buying shoes.

  1. Colored sugar is really easy to make at home. Just put some sugar in a bag and add a drop of food coloring and smooch it all around. I do this all the time. Ok, maybe I’ve done it three times. But it works very well.

  2. I’d wondered if you could do that, but I wasn’t brave enough to try. Thanks for the tip — now I won’t have to spend 79kr on one box of pink sugar! 🙂
