Ur-sviken*

At my physical therapy appointment this morning I heard on the radio that Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty is releasing a solo album next month (this is probably old news, but I’m a bit out of the loop these days without my American MTV and a subscription to Rolling Stone).

Well, that’s interesting, I thought, until I heard the single a few moments later. Even though he wrote the song and I usually love his stuff, this new bit of fluff sounds like so much cookie-cutter, Justin-Timberlake-inspired pop garbage. How could this come from the same pen as “3 A.M.” and “Push”? I’m horribly disappointed.

*A little play on the name of a local town — “Ursviken” means something like “the outer bay,” but you could separate it out to “Ur-sviken,” which would mean “horribly disappointed.”

  1. Hi Beverly,
I drove up to Coeur d’Alene on Monday, and held up the camera for some snapshots out the window for you as I took the Johnson Road cutoff! Since I don’t have my computer back from the shop until tomorrow, I can’t download them until then. But then I wondered, would it be solace or torture for you??? You say the word-I can email them or not. Actually they might be blurry, but there wasn’t any snow up there like we still have here. Of course it isn’t all green either, although I did see one green field somewhere.
Marquez is one of my favorite authors and I bought a new book, his autobiography which I had not seen before. I’ve read just about everything else he has written, some things even in Spanish.
Hope the kids are feeling better. Out of my six grandkids that I saw up north, only two were sick so that was great! One threw up in Home Depot, the other just had the sniffles. I hope I don’t come down with any of it. I have a lot of catching up to do.
Come see my new Bush quote on the sidebar. It’s a winner.

  2. Oh, I would love those pictures! I have been on that road so many times — when I was little we lived in Cottonwood for a few years and whenever we went to my grandparents’ place (which was often), we took the cutoff there. Their ranch was up against the foothills sort of behind the golf course, so it really was a shortcut between Cottonwood and Grangeville.

The Bush line is too good … I swear, nobody could make that stuff up! I don’t know whether it’s funnier or more unsettling, though ….

I’m really getting into One Hundred Years of Solitude, though I’m finding that it takes a fair bit of concentration — not the best book for when the kids are wild and noisy! I was just telling my husband earlier this evening that I wish I could read it in Spanish because it seems inevitable that something will be lost in the translation.

  3. Hi Beverly,

I’ve been lurking for the past month or so, but figured I’d delurk and say hi.

I’m half swedish (now living in the US), and have just started to read expat blogs – and it is just fascinating! I find it so interesting to see how Americans see Sweden – particularly the ones actually living there. (Personally, I think you deserve the extreme award for living as far north as you do! Wow.)

Love your writing, and am always excited to see a new post. Hang in there, and stay warm!
