Sunday

It’s been a pretty low-key weekend. It rained a fair amount on Friday, and the kids and I stayed in and dyed Easter eggs. Lydia is such a creative, artistic kid — she put all my best egg-dyeing efforts to shame. Tage helped out this year for the first time, but I think he was just as interested in drinking the dye as he was in coloring eggs. Even Olof came up and dyed an egg or two, so it turned out to have been a family affair.

Yesterday we all went to Olof’s parents’ house for the big Easter to-do. First we stayed outside in the snow and grilled some hot dogs (well, I didn’t, but everyone else did), then we sent the girls into the house to wait while Olof, his mom, and I hid the eggs. Once they were all hidden, the four kids spent about a half-hour hunting them and they managed (with a bit of help) to find every last egg. Egghunts aren’t a Swedish Easter tradition, so it’s been fun for me to see it become a tradition with my in-laws. Last year they were a bit skeptical, but they’re always good sports so they went along with it. This year I think they were looking forward to it just as much as we were.

After all the eggs were gathered up, we moved into the house and spent the rest of the afternoon and evening eating and just hanging out. Olof’s sister and brother-in-law are expecting a baby any day now, and we spent a fair amount of time talking about that and discussing baby names and whatnot. My own baby fever is just getting worse and worse — when Olof first suggested to me a month or so ago that we start trying for another baby in October I told him there was no way I was starting that soon … now I’m starting to wonder if I’ll be able to wait that long.

In other news, Mette is still with the in-laws and that seems to be going well for the time being. It’s still undecided if she’ll stay there permanently or move on to another home, but I feel that decision is more or less out of my hands now. We are going to take her to the vet for a check-up next week (or as soon as we can get an appointment for her) to see if there is any physical reason for her recent strange behavior. Both Olof’s mom and I suspect a false pregnancy, which would probably explain some things. Even if it is that, she still won’t be moving back in with us. I think she’s just too unpredictable to have here with the kids, and with so many of the neighborhood kids in and out all the time. It’s amazing how much calmer and more normal life seems without her stressed-out edginess. I feel disloyal to her saying it, but everything is much easier with just Asbjørn here.
