Computer woes

There are plenty of advantages to having a tech-savvy, computer-obsessed programmer for a husband, but there’s a downside, too. It’s not enough for him that he has two or three computers in his office that he can have his wicked way with, but he has to mess with my computer, too. He’s forever downloading stuff onto my hard drive and moving things around and updating this and that, and every couple of months he does me the supreme favor of upgrading my operating system. I’m sure this would be a good thing for a lot of people, but I really don’t care about all the fancy bells and whistles — I just want a system I can use without having to remember a bunch of confusing commands. It seems like every time I finally get used to something and feel comfortable using it, he changes it again. Argh!

Not only am I running a new distribution (or a new version of the same distribution? I really don’t know . . .), but my computer is so slow that it’s barely usable. I have to restart it every hour or so to get it back to a normal-ish speed, and it’s driving me crazy. When I asked him what was the matter with it, he said I have only enough memory to run one program at a time. I asked when that happened, and he said when he upgraded my operating system. Well for the love of all things holy . . .

Lest this post make him seem incompetent, I must point out that he really does know what he’s doing and that he can and will fix it (he just told me, “I have to make it worse before I can make it better” … *sigh*), but he has a bad habit of starting something and then leaving it half-done. To make matters worse, he’s really swamped with work and doesn’t have a ton of time to be sitting around up here straightening out my computer issues. So why did he create these issues, you wonder? Believe me, I wonder the same thing.
