Big Chill

I see in today’s newspaper that snow is forecast for Wednesday, and I hear through the grapevine that it actually did snow last night in parts north and inland of here. Bad timing that, considering that Olof and I just made a visit yesterday to the plant nursery and came home laden with petunias and the like for our flowerboxes (of course, one could make the argument that any snow in June is bad timing, and I wouldn’t disagree, but this new cold snap is particularly unwelcome, as I just lost a dozen or so plants to the last late frost a couple of weeks ago, and I don’t especially relish the idea of losing a dozen more now).

Worse, of course, than losing flowers (I don’t much like petunias anyway, to tell the truth, and could bear their loss more easily than that of the geraniums last month) is that the kids’ summer vacation starts this week, and I daresay they’d enjoy it rather better if they could skip the heavy coats and stocking caps when they went out to play. Poor Lydia bought the cutest little summer dress to wear on the last day of school, and I fear she’ll be bitterly disappointed if she has to cover it up with her winter coat when the kids parade over to the church on Friday for the end-of-school ceremony.

At least the “use by” date on the sunscreen I bought after last week’s heat wave is still a couple of years in the future. Looks like it might take us that long to use it.
