Quite out of the blue, it was announced today that the company Olof has worked for for the past 7½ years, MySQL, was acquired by Sun Microsystems for the staggering–to me, at any rate–sum of $1 billion US. In the short term, things should stay more or less the same, but what this will mean for Olof, and by extension, me and the kids, in the long term is anybody’s guess. Olof’s a very laid-back, take-it-as-it-comes kind of guy, so after the initial surprise wore off he mostly stopped thinking about it. Me, on the other hand, I deal less well with change. It’s a good thing, then, that it’s him actually dealing with it, and not me. Not yet, at least.

Your family and Olof was my first thought when I read the news.
So no stock options in the family then? 🙂
/M;
Well, since you mention it, we’re not entirely without options here. 😉
I don’t think you need to worry. They are always going to need presence in Sweden, and the work must be very flexible anyway, since Olof can work from home. On the other hand it may present opportunities to work in the States, if that’s what you want.
You’re probably right, Anna. The only real worrisome thing at this point is that his department (Finance & Administration) is the *one* department that won’t be maintained as it currently is, so one way or another, he’ll be doing a different job in the future.
And moving to the States is not something we’re thinking about … even though there might be opportunities, it’s not something either of us is interested in.
