Powerful tiny fists

I think every pregnant woman suspects at one time or another that she’s carrying an octopus, or an acrobat troupe, or, at the very least, twins. Some days it seems that it’s simply not possible that it’s just one baby doing all the flipping and flopping and kicking and jabbing that goes on in there.

This baby I’m expecting now — and reliable sources assure me that there is, indeed, only one — is very active. Much more active than I remember any of my older three being, particularly at such an early stage (I’ve only just entered the last trimester and have nearly three months until my due date). The kicks come so fast and furious that in my peripheral vision I catch glimpses of my shirt fluttering with the movement. Sometimes, particularly at night when I’m trying to sleep, the poking and prodding from inside is actually painful and I have to push at what I assume is a tiny foot to move it away from one or another tender spot. How can something so small — the size of a butternut squash, if babycenter.com is to be believed — pack such a wallop?

  1. I remember during my last trimester dealing with a VERY big baby (she ended up being almost 5 kg when she was born) and a VERY short torso. I watched my belly stretch out into these weird oblong shapes or I’d stare as small ‘balls’ would move across my abdomen. I really had to stop dancing at that point – I could barely walk in a straight line at times because she’d suddenly throw my balance off. Wild times!
Unfortunately, as you’ve probably experienced, this is when time slows to a crawl. Hopefully the Christmas festivities will help the time pass sooner than later.

  2. I’ve been away for 3 months in Texas so I’ve fallen behind with your blog. I hope you are feeling well! Did I tell you that I know 3 people who are all expecting their fourth child??! I don’t know how you do it. Just two of them are wearing us out!!! 🙂
