Yes, but does it come with smug self-satisfaction in every bite?

Yesterday afternoon Tage was sitting at the table building a “super-fast talking car” from Legos while I kneaded a batch of bread dough then set it aside to rise.  As I covered the dough with a dishtowel, he asked, “Why are you making bread?”

“Because we’re out of bread,” I answered, “and I thought we might like to have some more.”

He considered that for a moment, then informed me with exaggerated patience, “Mom, you can buy bread at the store.”

  1. I take my knitting everywhere – especially while I’m waiting during one of the kids’ activities. As I knitted away at the pool a kid came over and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was knitting a sock. He looked at me, shook his head and said “you know you can BUY them at WalMart!”. Ahem.
(BTW, here’s a very belated ‘grats on the soon to be new addition. You’re a much braver woman than I. I can barely handle the two I’ve got – and they are Lydia & Tage’s ages!)

  2. I’d love to have time (or mostly it’s about being too lazy) to bake my own bread, especially considering all the icky stuff in the store-made loaves. My mum used to bake all the time when I was little. When I was a teenager and she didn’t bake as much I asked why she didn’t bake anymore and she said: well, then I did it because it was cheaper not because I necessarily loved to bake. How can such a luxury be cheaper?! (Not saying you do it for financial reasons, just telling a story!)
