Oh, these accursed fruit flies! Every time I think I’ve won the battle against them, more show up, this time on a bunch of bananas I’ve got sitting on the counter. Ick.

But anyway, we’ve got more interesting things going on around here, so I won’t linger on the flies. Last Thursday, less than three weeks after we turned in Tage’s pre-school application and were told that it would probably be a couple of months before we heard anything, our second choice called and said that they had a place for him starting this week. Today they were doing school photos, so he was invited in for that, then on Friday we’ll have an introductory meeting in preparation for orientation next week.

Olof took him in for the photos this morning, and he was so cute when he was getting ready. He chose his own clothes–a Batman shirt and Batman socks, and pants that are a good two inches too short, but I’ve learned to pick my battles–and looked so grown-up sitting at the table with his bowl of Cheerios. Before they left, he told me rather concernedly, “I’m not ready to go to school. I don’t have any backpack.”

I reminded him that his Spiderman backpack was in the car, and that he could ask Olof to get it for him. He thought that sounded okay, but then remembered something else.  “I don’t have any papers.”  I told him that was all right, that he wouldn’t need any papers today and that we’d get him some papers later.  Those worries allayed, he hurried downstairs to put his Spiderman shoes on and head off.

They came home after an hour or so and Olof reported that all went well.  Most of this kids are much younger than Tage is, but there is a boy about his age–also with Spiderman shoes–who is starting now as well.  It’s a small center, with only fifteen kids total, so that’s nice.  It’s also just a couple of blocks from our house, which means that walking there in the winter won’t be too bad.  Best of all, Tage is excited about his new adventure and can’t wait to go back.
