Hair today?

Lydia’s hair is a constant source of conflict between her and me. To reduce the issue to its simplest terms, I want it combed and she doesn’t want it combed. She has an appointment tomorrow afternoon for a haircut, and I’ve put my best efforts into bribing her to take off more than the half-inch she’d like trimmed. I offered to pay her 150:- (about twenty bucks) if she goes with a shoulder-length ‘do. Her father has upped the ante to an additional 150:- for a short cut. She’s agreed reluctantly to my terms, but even mentioning Olof’s offer sends her into fits of wailing and shrieking. How-eeeeeveeerr, she really wants that money.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

  1. My mom had a strict rule in our house – either your hair is neatly combed and out of your eyes or it gets chopped off. I distinctly remember having all my glorious platinum blonde hair hacked off to shorter than short at the beginning of one summer. I hated that cut and I vowed to lovingly brush and arrange my locks to avoid the scissors.
The really sad thing? I have a very similar cut now. And no, I won’t admit that my mom was right when she said it looked cute on me.

  2. Mo, I really want to have a strict rule like that, but it seems I’m not so good at enforcing. She always wants to know *why* it has to be combed, and I don’t have a really good answer aside from that it looks like crap if it’s not combed (about which she says she doesn’t care). Guess I’m going to have to break out the “because I said so” soon!

Anna — I had a pediatrician back in the States who once said to me, “A kid who can’t be bribed can’t be trusted.” Haha!
