Yesterday I happened across this website, a ticker showing the cost to the United States and Americans of the war in Iraq, and I’ve been staring at it with a sort of horrified fascination. Here in Sweden I’m pretty insulated from the grim realities of what my government (and I use the word “my” extremely loosely here) is perpetrating–not only against Iraqis, but against its own citizens–and wake-up calls like the rising, rising numbers on that page can leave me reeling for days. It is truly beyond my comprehension how anyone can think that what is happening over there is a Good Thing.
