A year-and-a-half or so ago we were over at my sister-in-law’s house and in browsing her bookshelves I discovered The Best Vegetarian Cookbook EVER, and planned to pick myself up a copy right away. For weeks and months I searched, scouring all the bookstores in town, plus online booksellers, and even a few bookstores in Stockholm when we visited there. I even looked on English-language sites for an English copy, though I would rather have had it in Swedish, but all I got was nothing. I ultimately put it on my “watch list” on adlibris, and was saddened and dismayed to learn several months ago that it was definitivt slut.*
Fast forward to last Monday, when we got a flyer in the mail from the local bookstore, featuring a book with a similar title. Always on the lookout for good vegetarian cookbooks, I decided to check it out online, and what to my wondering eyes did appear? Not only the advertised book, but a book that, by all descriptions, was THE BOOK! I compared it carefully to the definitivt slut book, and other than copyright date it appeared to be the same exact book. I wasn’t entirely sure, because it listed only a translator, not an author, and it’s possible that the same translator might have worked on two different but similar books. Also, the cover was different from the book I knew, but again, that’s not so unusual for new printings. I crossed my fingers and placed an order, then waited, waited, waited.
Today the book finally came, and lo and behold, it IS the same book I’ve been dreaming of owning these many months. It’s like Christmas a whole month early!

Love your blog. My dad is from Stockholm and I dream of going back to Sweden again someday. (I spent the summer there when I was 12). It is fun for me to get an idea of what it would be like to be from the US and living in Sweden. For now, my dad is teaching my children to speak Swedish, although I never learned (except a few cuss words from my Swedish cousins).
It’s the little things that make us happy! 🙂 So what new recipes have you tried? I saw one for sweet potato burritos the other day and thought of you. It sounded really good! I will find it again and send it to you.
