The past several weeks I’ve been having some trouble with SPD, a fairly common problem during late pregnancy. I seem to have a relatively mild case, all things considered, but it can cause me significant pain when I walk even short distances, and the resultant ache in my hips, especially at night, is not for the faint of heart.
Last week I had finally had enough and I decided to make my first-ever visit to a chiropractor to see if he could give me some relief. My appointment was on Monday, and let me tell you, I left that office a believer. Not only did he get my SPD problems sorted, but he made a quick couple of adjustments to my ribs that all but got rid of a persistent pain that had been with me since a bout of the flu more than two years ago. I feel like a new woman.
I confess that up until I tried it for myself, I had been rather a skeptic about chiropractic. It was a measure of my desperation that I went so far as to book an appointment, and even once that was done, I hemmed and hawed until the last minute about canceling it. But man, what a difference just one visit has made for me … no wonder people get hooked on this stuff!
See, now why didn’t you post this 5 years ago when I was pregnant with Cait…and then again when I was pregnant with Kev? SPD almost put me in a wheelchair this last time around, and it was one of THE main reasons I decided to not have anymore, tied with my age factor. I am convinced that should I do it again I’d be in a chair! I now know what a chicken wishbone feels like… that pain was just so intense, both hips and in the pubic joint right in the middle… owie owie owie! I’m so glad you found relief!!
I had this too. Especially with Lucien. Severely. To the point I called Lisa (chriolisa) in the middle of the night for help. Fortunately, I have a wonderful chiro which worked very well. It did not, however, totally get rid of all the discomfort/pain. I found a fantastic book called “Relieving Pelvic Pain During and After Pregnancy: How Women Can Heal Chronic Pelvic Instability” by Cecile Rost. It changed my life. I highly recommend it. I went to barely being able to walk, to feeling almost one hundred percent to feeling fantastic. Worth the 13 usd plus postage from amazon. It has great exercises ( I use the term loosely) and they real do help. The birth advice sucks, but the stuff about pelvic instability is spot on.
I’ve been lucky and haven’t felt any SPD yet. Hope it gets better for you!
