New tricks

Last spring we entered Tage in the lottery for Suzuki-method violin lessons, and his name was picked for the course starting this fall. I have no experience whatever with this style of music instruction, but I’ve heard very good things about it, so I’m hopeful that it leads to good things for us.

I don’t know how common it is in Suzuki lessons elsewhere, but at the music school here parent involvement includes not only me attending all lessons for two years, but also me buying a violin of my own and learning alongside my boy. In fact, for the first several weeks, the group lessons are parents-only, and the kids join in only after we’ve all gotten a rudimentary understanding of all things violin. Earlier this week, I went to the first lesson, and I admit I left feeling a bit daunted. I spent eight years in band as a kid, but nothing about playing the trombone prepared me for the violin. This should prove interesting.

  1. I was just over at your blog, Anna, and I saw that you made the big announcement — congratulations again! And congratulations on getting such good ultrasound shots; mine are never so clear! You know, we’re due almost exactly the same time — my original due date, based on my last period, was January 8, but they bumped me up to January 5 after the ultrasound. I know it’s not an exact science, but since the 5th is Olof’s birthday I thought it would be fun to go with that! 🙂

  2. Thanks! It was about time I outed myself 🙂 It seems like our scan shots are very clear compared to most others I’ve seen so I’m happy for that. The place we go to have really new equipment, could be that, or perhaps the person operating the machine, or just individual factors relating to the mother or the baby? Hope you “hit” Olof’s birthday, that’d be fun! My birthday is 28 January but then the baby would be away overdue and they would have induced me. A friend of mine, her mother, the grandmother and her mother’s brother (and the mother and the mother’s brother are not twins) all share the same birthday – the probability for that must be so low!
