I give you tempeh, made by my very own hands. The first picture is the raw deal, so to speak, and the second is what I ate for dinner tonight, tempeh dusted in flour and spices (onion powder, chili powder, ginger, salt, and pepper) and stir-fried with wok vegetables. I’ll understand if you’re skeptical–I was myself–but this stuff is seriously good. If all “alternate protein sources” were this tasty, I just might be able to turn my husband into a vegetarian.

I got the recipe (more like instructions, actually) from http://www.tempeh.info . I also ordered the starter from them. I think it cost something like 80kr (including shipping), and it took just a few days to get here. We ate up all of the first batch within a couple of days, so I think I’ll make some more soon.
