Road trip

A few weeks ago Olof signed up for a walking program sponsored by the company he works for, and on Monday he set out on his first measured walk.  The plan is to walk at least 10,000 steps per day, with a final goal of 750 kilometers–or the distance from Malmö to Amsterdam–walked by mid-December.

This coincides very well, of course, with Asbjørn’s weight loss program, and he’s been getting a few thousand steps in himself most days.  For the sake of fairness, Olof has been alternating which dog he takes along on his long, nightly walk, so Asbjørn isn’t getting the full benefit of all of Olof’s exercise, but he is absolutely getting more of a workout these past days than he ordinarily gets.

This evening Tage went along as well and they walked three or four kilometers.  That’s a pretty long walk for a little guy with short legs, so I’m sure he’ll sleep hard tonight.  I’d really like to get out there myself and walk with them (and both dogs could go then, as well), but I’m good for only about a kilometer or so before my leg just stops cooperating.  I try not to complain too much about having MS, because really, my disease course has been extremely mild, but sometimes it is the most frustrating thing.  I mean, I have plenty of stamina to walk as far as Olof does, but if my leg won’t take the steps, there’s just not much I can do, no matter how energetic I feel.

I do think that maybe I’ll get a pedometer of my own, though, and start keeping track of my steps, too.  Maybe between the two of us, Olof and I can make it as far as Brussels.
