Ulterior motive

I decided last week that our evenings would go more smoothly if we started eating dinner at five o’clock instead of six.  Olof usually isn’t done working by then, so I expected a bit of resistance from him but was surprised when he readily agreed.  It wasn’t until later, of course, that I realized his willingness came more from the Star Trek Voyager-Babylon 5-Deep Space Nine line-up that starts at six on the newly-acquired science fiction channel than from any real concern, one way or the other, about homework and baths and bedtime.  Whatever the reason, however, we’re now eating at five, just like “normal” people — Lydia couldn’t be more relieved.

  1. Isn’t 5 very early or perhaps that’s when most Swedes with kids eat? We’re dinks so we have dinner any time between 6 and 8 usually.

  2. Five feels pretty early to me, as well, but it does seem that most of Lydia’s friends’ families eat that early … up ’til now, we’ve been eating between 6 and 7, but that really isn’t working so well when we’ve got kids who need to get in bed around 8. It’s definitely an adjustment for us, though!

I checked out the Ulterior Motive link, by the way … cool stuff!
