Makin’ bacon

Did anybody ever see that show that was on last season, John Doe? The one about the guy who woke up on an island off the coast of Washington with no memory whatsoever of anything but somehow knowing everything? If not, it was just your basic cop drama with a not-tremendously-compelling twist, so it was no big loss that it was canceled after one season (except that it ended with a cliffhanger that still has me wondering). Anyway, there was one episode where John and his cop buddy were in a slaughterhouse for some reason and the cop was grossed out by it. John said something to the effect of what’s the big deal, you love bacon don’t you, and the cop replied, “Hey, as far as I’m concerned, bacon comes from the magical happy place.” Given that bacon has long been the chink in my vegetarian armor, I have decided to adopt that as my motto. From now on, bacon is not meat; it is a gift from the magical happy place.

In accordance with my new outlook on bacon, I ate bacon-veggie wraps for lunch today at Debbie’s house and they were mighty tasty. Helena made the same wraps last summer when I went to her house for lunch, and they were just as good today as I remembered them.

There were a bunch of us there for lunch today: Helena, Mirage, and Melanie, as well as Mirage’s husband, Jim, and Olof, Lydia, and Tage. It was fun to get together again with everyone and talk and laugh. We hatched a new plan today to start up a quilting bee and make quilts for everyone in the group. It was mostly Helena’s idea, but it sounds like fun and I think it would be a cool thing to do. Our “big room” would be the perfect place to set up a quilting frame and sewing machine and it would be great to have somewhere where we could leave all our stuff lying around and not have to worry about gathering everything up every time and remembering to bring all the necessary supplies, etc. I think it would be a great activity for us.

  1. I like that the “magickal happy place”! That’s the perfect place for bacon to come from….I’m not a huge beef or pork eater…love chicken and fish though. If you have ever been around live chickens, you understand the “no love lost” thing I have for them…they are evil creatures! LOL
