We hang the printout on the bulletin board inside the entryway and most days we remember to check it before she leaves for school, so she’ll know what to expect. Today’s entry was: Vad köket erbjuder; alt. Pytt i panna med rödbetor, or roughly, “Cook’s choice; otherwise O’Brien potatoes with meat and red beets.” Now I could be wrong, but that second bit seems unnecessary. I mean, if it does end up being the pytt i panna, wouldn’t that still be the “cook’s choice,” seeing as that’s what the cook chose to serve? I’m easily amused by word silliness, I admit, and I’ve been getting small chuckles from that all day.

In other news, we have finally reached the darkest day of the year, if I’m not mistaken (and I might well be, but since the solstice is tomorrow, doesn’t that make the darkest day today?). As most newspapers do, our local newspaper lists the daily sunrise and sunset times — today sunrise was at 9:44 in the morning, and sunset at 1:27 in the afternoon. Yesterday morning Olof and I drove to pick up Lydia from a friend’s house, and the sun was already setting at 11:30. And people wonder how I can hate winter.

The school lunch menus are planned far in advance, and every couple of months Lydia brings home a printout listing the next several weeks’ fare.
