I was feeling ravenous a bit earlier, that kind of ravenous-ness that won’t wait for the ten minutes it takes to cook oatmeal or whip up some scones. We’re out of bread so I couldn’t have the typical Swedish breakfast of bread and butter with cheese and I couldn’t have cold cereal because we’re nearly out and I need to save that for the kids’ breakfasts. I was starting to get that panicky “I must eat and I must eat NOW” feeling when I remembered that we still had some of the carrot cake that Debbie had left yesterday afternoon. Talk about the breakfast of champions.<\/p>\n
I had a nice little entry all plotted out just now, but I’m afraid I’m going to go off on a tangent here because that last line reminded me of something. Well, first it made me think of Wheaties and how much I miss Wheaties (Sweden could learn a thing or two from the States when it comes to breakfast cereals). Then I thought of the Kurt Vonnegut book Breakfast of Champions<\/i>. Several years ago there was a film made from that book, and the film was shot in and around Twin Falls, Idaho, where I lived for last five years before I moved to Sweden. (Not so strange, probably, considering that it starred Bruce Willis and he lives only about an hour’s drive from Twin Falls, but it was exciting for us nonetheless.) It’s not a good movie, which you’ll understand if you’ve ever read the book–it’s one of those books that just cannot<\/i> be translated to film–but I do watch it now and then to get a little glimpse of home. It’s fun, too, to be able to show Olof some of the southern Idaho countryside in action, as it were. Idaho doesn’t make it to the big screen (or the small screen, for that matter) very often, so I’ve got to take the opportunities to show it off wherever I can find them.<\/p>\n
Speaking of countryside, Olof, Tage, and I are leaving in a couple of hours to drive Fredrik and Helena up to Luleå to catch their flight to Greece. I’ve never been up there so I’m a little excited to check it out, even though I suspect already that it will be much like this area where we live. It should be fun anyway, though.
