One night last week, Lydia and I were in the kitchen together, she emptying the dishwasher and I putting the finishing touches on supper.\u00a0 We were talking about school and she said that she really liked her new art teacher.\u00a0 I asked what he was like, and, among other things, that he was “young.”\u00a0 I wondered how young, and she qualified, “Well, maybe not young<\/i>, but like 30.\u00a0 Not like 40 or anything.”<\/p>\n
“Is 40 old?” I asked.<\/p>\n
“Yes,” she answered.<\/p>\n
“Do you think Dad’s old?”<\/p>\n
“Yes,” she said again, practically scoffing.<\/p>\n
“Do you think I’m old?”<\/p>\n
“No,” she answered.<\/p>\n
“Oh, good,” I said.\u00a0 “But I guess I will be in five years.”<\/p>\n
Her head snapped up and she burst out suddenly, “Oh my god!\u00a0 Are you 35?”\u00a0 She shook her head in disbelief.\u00a0 “I thought you were, like, 32.”<\/p>\n
